The Cochecorral Community, one of the countrymen organizations that promoted the declaration of the Protective Forest Colambo - Yacuri, has developed an important process of social organization and conservation of its natural resources. The community maintains the native forest as its Reserve (Forest of Angashcola) to preserve water springs and to become beneficiaries of proper management of the forest products.
NCI started projects of cooperation with the Cochecorral Community in 2002, together organizing the legalization of community territory (more than 70 years the Community did not secure legal possession), zone partition, ordering and participative regulation as to the utilization of the community territory. At the same time, the farmers were trained to administer the reserve and to set up agro-forestall systems in the zones destined for culture, using species of wild native fruits like toronche or Andean Papaya (Vasconcellea spp.). A small rural company, dedicated to the transformation and commercialization of native fruits, has gained significance in the local market.
The process of production and commercialization of native fruits also motivated the local Association of Organic Coffee Producers, Procafeq, (300 producers) and they initiated the production of native fruits particularly toronche and recently chirimoya (cherimola Annona) on their properties.
