The Colambo Yacuri area contains the southern extension of the mountain range that shapes the Podocarpus National Park (Royal Mountain Range), integrated by shrub land deserts and cloudy forests key to the preservation and continuity of the ecosystems in the south of Ecuador and the north of Peru. The largest section of these natural areas is in the Espindola region (18,000 ha, 12,000 of desert and 6,000 of forest), and it is the direct source of drinking water to supply 16.000 people and 5 irrigation channels with the vital liquid.
In 2002, farmers’ organizations, municipalities and NCI obtained the declaration of the Protected Area of Forest and Vegetation Colambo Yacuri, with 73000 has.
Several projects in the area are executed and try to consolidate community management of the natural ecosystems and native forest proposing better alternatives to the local productive systems.
