San Francisco Scientific Station

ecuador1San Francisco Scientific Station (SFSS) is a centre destined to the research of tropical mountain ecosystems of southern Ecuador, with the idea to generate and to extend useful information about the conservation and organization of this high-priority ecosystem.

The SFSS is located within the Biological Reserve San Francisco (2500 acres)  at 30 km distance of the city of Loja, next to the Northern limit of the Podocarpus National Park. The facilities of the Station accommodate simultaneously up to 35 researchers, as basic services are available: lodging, feeding, radio communication, laboratories, herbarium, computer rooms, Internet, telephone and a 15 km long network of footpaths.

In 1997, the German Research Foundation DFG launched, at the SFSS, a multidisciplinary research program entitled “Utility of the Tropical Mountain Forest in the south of Ecuador: Dynamic diversity, processes and potentialities of development”, the largest of its category in Ecuador and anticipated until the year 2012.

The program includes 30 projects related to biodiversity studies, climate, cycles of nutrients and applied ecology, with the participation of a nourished group of  renowned scientists of more than 30 institutions among universities, institutes, museums, herbariums and botanical gardens of Germany, Ecuador and other countries. In addition, the program trained more than a hundred new scientists, all students of Doctorate, Masters and Pre-degree and many of them Ecuadorian.
