Regional Water Fund Nearly Finalized April 2009
Managing watershed
conservation on a regional basis
NCI’s Ecuador office has been busy finalizing
the documents to create a Regional Water Fund that would manage
watershed conservation programs for
a three-province region. The fund, called FORAGUA, will likely consist
of five municipalities in southern Ecuador, and will be set up as
a trust to manage the funds collected by the municipalities through
environmental taxes added to citizens’ water bills. These
funds will serve as a counterpart to the resources received from
local businesses and international cooperation. The trust will initially
contain approximately $800,000, and the municipalities will spend
$350,000 annually in the protection of water resources and biodiversity.
We hope to officially establish the fund in June.
