NCI Conservation Successes Highlighted at Paris UNESCO Conference

Presenting a series of cutting edge scientific findings on biodiversity in southern Ecuador

At the UNESCO International Year of Biodiversity Science Policy Conference earlier this year in Paris, NCI, together with the Technical and National Universities of Loja, presented a series of cutting edge scientific findings on biodiversity in southern Ecuador. The studies addressed environmental education, community development, reserve management, and watershed protection, and highlighted the importance of high-quality research for effective conservation programs and policy-making decisions. The German Research Foundation (DFG) who maintains one of the largest research programs outside Germany at NCI’s San Francisco Scientific Station, also organized a side Shuar children event related to the conservation successes that result from joint research, education, and knowledge transfer programs in the UNESCO Podocarpus El Condor Biosphere Reserve in southern Ecuador.

Over 250 participants from all continents were present at the symposium, which was one of several conferences leading up to the Tenth Annual Convention on Biological Diversity’s Conference of the Parties (COP10) to be held in Nagoya, Japan this October.
