Loja Expands its Municipal Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas

The Municipality of Loja announced the expansion of its Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas, protecting 72 fundamental water sources for local populations 

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, with the support of Nature and Culture International, the Municipality of Loja announced the expansion of its Municipal Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas. This expansion adds an additional 109,279 acres to the 73,700 previously protected acres. 

The Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas of Loja protect 72 different water sources and are home to iconic species such as the spectacled bear and blue-throated hummingbird.

Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas are protected natural spaces that have been established by local and/or provincial governments. They aim to promote the conservation and recovery of ecosystems and local wildlife. These areas also focus on the maintenance of rivers and water sources, ensuring sustainable use of the area’s natural resources by local communities.

The process to establish these Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas began in 2019 when the municipal administration made the decision to update the legal regulations to protect water sources in the municipality.

In November 2020, decision makers approved the Ordinance for the Protection and Restoration of Water Sources, Fragile Ecosystems, Biodiversity, and Environmental Services in Loja, by unanimous vote. At that time, 73,700 acres were established as protected Municipal Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas.

This Saturday, June 18, 2022, with the technical and legal support of Nature and Culture International, 109,277 acres were added.

“A large part of these Municipal Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas are areas of water interest because of the location of the surface water catchments as they provide water to different populations,” says Ángel Jaramillo, Project Coordinator at Nature and Culture’s Podocarpus-El Cóndor Mosaic.

In this territory, there are 72 water sources that supply the city of Loja, its peri-urban neighborhoods, parish capitals, and other rural neighborhoods of the parishes.

In addition, these Municipal Conservation and Sustainable Use Areas will protect territories where a variety of exceptional species are found, among them the spectacled bear, the blue-throated hummingbird, as well as endemic amphibians stand out.

Nature and Culture, together with Andes Amazon Fund and the Regional Water Fund (FORAGUA) supported the Municipal GAD of Loja in the preparation of the technical file to add these 109,277 acres in forest spaces, paramo, and shrub vegetation to their conservation areas.

LOJA AMPLÍA SUS ÁREAS DE CONSERVACIÓN Y USO SOSTENIBLE

• Las Áreas de Conservación y Uso Sostenible de Loja suman 74 099,37 hectáreas. Este sábado se añadieron 44 223,63 hectáreas a las ya existentes con el apoyo de Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional.
• Las ACMUS de Loja albergan 72 fuentes de agua y son el hogar de especies emblemáticas como el oso de anteojos y el colibrí de garganta azul.

El Municipio de Loja entregó este sábado 18 de junio del 2022 la resolución de la ampliación de las Áreas de Conservación Municipal y Uso Sostenible (ACMUS) de Loja. Con el apoyo de Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional, el cantón ahora cuenta con 74 099,37 hectáreas que están bajo esta figura.

Las Áreas de Conservación y Uso Sostenible o ACUS constituyen espacios naturales establecidos por los gobiernos provinciales, cantonales o parroquiales, destinados a promover la conservación y recuperación de los ecosistemas y su vida silvestre, mantener los ríos y fuentes de agua, y garantizar el uso sustentable de los recursos naturales por parte de las comunidades locales.

El proceso para establecer estas ACMUS se inició a partir del 2019, cuando la administración municipal tomó la decisión de actualizar la normativa jurídica para llevar a cabo procesos de conservación de las fuentes de agua en todo el cantón.

En noviembre de 2020 se aprobó por decisión unánime del Cabildo la Ordenanza para la Protección y Restauración de Fuentes de Agua, Ecosistemas Frágiles, Biodiversidad y Servicios Ambientales del cantón Loja. En ese momento se establecieron 29 825, 74 ha como ACMUS.

Este sábado 18 de junio del 2022, con el apoyo técnico y legal de Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional, se sumaron 44 223,63 hectáreas a las ACMUS, las cuales están divididas en 42 bloques.

“Gran parte de estas ACMUS son areas de interés hídrico donde se sitúan las captaciones de agua superficiales que sirven para dotar del servicio a diferentes poblaciones”, cuenta Ángel Jaramillo, coordinador de Proyectos en el Mosaico Podocarpus- El Cóndor de Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional Ecuador.

En este territorio se encuentran 72 fuentes de agua que abastecen a la ciudad de Loja, sus barrios periurbanos, cabeceras parroquiales y otros barrios rurales de las parroquias.

Además, en estas ACMUS se protegerán áreas donde habitan especies excepcionales entre las que se destacan el oso de anteojos, el colibrí garganta azul y muchas variedades de anfibios endémicos.

Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional, junto con Andes Amazon Fund y el Fondo Regional del Agua (FORAGUA) apoyaron al GAD Municipal de Loja en la elaboración del expediente técnico para sumar estas 44 223,63 hectáreas en espacios de bosque, páramos y vegetación arbustiva a sus áreas de conservación.
